Northside HS is an inner-city high school situated in the North side of Houston.  Its enrollment is composed of primarily minority students with Hispanic students in the majority.  Students are from low-income families with little or no resources for higher education.

JDHAA awards scholarships to any Northside student regardless of race, color, or religion.  Scholarships are awarded based on three basic principals:

  1. Student’s desire for higher education and scholastic achievement
  2. Staff recommendation
  3. Student need

The process for selection of awardees is as follows:

Letters of recommendation from Northside senior counselors and teachers are submitted with every scholarship application.  Applications are reviewed by the JDHAA scholarship selection committee, and personal interviews are conducted with each applicant.  Based on application criteria, personal interviews, and need, scholarships from $500 to $2,000 are awarded.

Although the majority of students attend colleges and universities in Houston such as UH Downtown, UH main campus, HCC and Rice, several scholarship recipients are able to attend other state universities such as Texas A&M, University of Texas, Baylor College, and Texas Tech.  Our assistance has also made it possible for some students to attend out of state universities including Boston University, Cornell and Tufts.

One hundred percent of corporate and personal donations designated for scholarships go directly into the scholarship fund.  The annual gala and souvenir program booklet are self-supporting and yield additional funds for scholarships.  Operating expenses are covered by membership dues.
